Our Story

Amend: A Journey of Support and Awareness

amend

In the 1990s, awareness of mental illness was minimal, myths were widespread, and stigma was deeply entrenched. Families struggled with self-stigma, guilt, and societal rejection, longing for accurate information and support. In response, they came together to form AMEND Self-Help Group.

Founded in 1992, AMEND is a registered society under the Karnataka Societies Act-1960, initiated by families of persons with mental illness. In its early days, AMEND provided a sense of relief—“We are not alone.” Pre-digital era, information on mental illness was scarce, so AMEND took the lead in educating families through lectures, seminars, and workshops featuring experts from NIMHANS and other institutions. This helped families overcome stigma, build resilience, and navigate caregiving challenges. AMEND’s transformative efforts were recognized with the “Distinguished Service Award” by the Indian Psychiatric Society, Karnataka Branch (2004-2005).

Sumana Public Charitable Trust – Lifetime Support for PwMIs

With the digital age improving awareness, AMEND adapted its approach, offering online sessions during COVID while maintaining offline meetings. However, a pressing concern emerged among senior family carers—“Who after me?” The passing of caregivers intensified fears for the future of their loved ones. A survey among AMEND families revealed that 97% desired a lifetime care facility for their loved ones.

Driven by this need, AMEND families established Sumana Public Charitable Trust to create a lifetime care facility ensuring safety, dignity, and continuity of care. What began as a support group for families has now evolved into a mission to provide secure, compassionate lifetime care for persons with mental illness.
