Amend: A Journey of Support and Awareness

About

In the 1990s, awareness of mental illness was minimal; moreover, myths were widespread and stigma was deeply entrenched. Consequently, families struggled with self-stigma, guilt, and societal rejection, while longing for accurate information and support.

In response, they came together to form the AMEND Self-Help Group. Founded in 1992, AMEND is a registered society under the Karnataka Societies Act-1960, initiated by families of persons with mental illness. In its early days, AMEND provided a sense of relief — We are not alone.

Since information on mental illness was scarce in the pre-digital era, AMEND, therefore, took the lead in educating families through lectures, seminars, and workshops featuring experts from NIMHANS and other institutions. As a result, families gradually overcame stigma, built resilience, and navigated caregiving challenges more confidently. Furthermore, AMEND’s transformative efforts were recognized with the “Distinguished Service Award” by the Indian Psychiatric Society, Karnataka Branch (2004–2005).

Sumana Public Charitable Trust – Lifetime Support for PwMIs

With the digital age improving awareness, AMEND adapted its approach by offering online sessions during COVID, while still maintaining offline meetings. However, a pressing concern soon emerged among senior family carers — Who after me?

The passing of caregivers, therefore, intensified fears for the future of their loved ones. Consequently, a survey among AMEND families revealed that 97% desired a lifetime care facility for their loved ones.

Driven by this need, AMEND families went on to establish the Sumana Public Charitable Trust to create a lifetime care facility ensuring safety, dignity, and continuity of care. What began as a small support group for families has now evolved into a focused mission to provide secure, compassionate, and lifelong care for persons with mental illness.
